If you poke around in the storage room of the ecology research lab, you might catch a whiff of the strong scent of mothballs. And if you follow your nose, you will find a row of wooden storage units that open to reveal drawers filled with about 400 birds lying on their backs, neatly sorted and catalogued with handwritten tags.

As a largely Catholic community, the University of Dallas strives to concern itself with pressing issues Catholics face in contemporary culture. On hand Wednesday evening to undertake the controversial issue of illegal immigration were Dr. Richard Dougherty, chair of UD's politics department, and Southern Methodist University's political science professor Dr. Matthew Wilson. The Annual Bradford Debate placed Dougherty in formal opposition against the case made by Wilson in favor of the following resolution: that the United States should create a legal path to citizenship for undocumented aliens with extended tenancy.

Men's basketball shows heart

Of every athletic event I've attended on campus during my three years at the University of Dallas, Saturday's men's basketball senior game will always stand out in my mind as the most intense, pulse-pounding show of school spirit and appreciation that I've ever seen.

Player spotlight: Travis Ekmark

The consensus opinion about the University of Dallas men's basketball team is that they are undersized with no "big men" to challenge the opposition in the paint. Even though forward Travis Ekmark stands at a healthy six feet, three inches tall, he does not look as physically imposing as some of the giants he challenges down low every game.

The bats of the University of Dallas softball team heated up on a cold night in Sherman, but they weren't enough to bring home the season's first wins against rival Austin College.

In the early going of game one, UD and Austin traded blows through the first three innings until the fourth, in which the Crusaders plated four runs, two off senior pitcher Whitney Thomas' homerun, the team's first of the year.

Track and field at the University of Dallas has continually increased in quality since its inception in 1999. The new team is excited for the season and hungry for victories and records.

Last season, coach Jodi Hawkins helped lead the team to several new records, including the men's 3,000 meters and 800 meters and the women's 3,000 meters and 4x100 meter relay.

Women's basketball ended their regular season this weekend on a high note. The Lady Crusaders will enter the NEAC tournament with back-to-back wins and much deserved winning record of 13-12.

For those of us who don't play, it is hard to comprehend just what these players have to endure during their season: They first took the court in November, and will not finish until the NEAC tournament closes next week.

Re: "Has national debt reached a critical mass?" (2/16)

What exactly is a critical mass of debt? Do you not see that it is only a number? Do you not comprehend that nations are not like human beings? A nation, by nature, does not die. Why is it that you love money so much that you would want to keep it for yourself instead of simply increasing a mathematical number? Do you feel you pay this in taxes? Inflation? Do you feel cheated of your earned money through "hard work"? Do you truly have the sagacity to say that $113,000 is so much money to you that you will not aid another human being? Is the nature of the human being so selfish and unlike the Christianity I believe in?
Following President Bush's 2004 re-election victory, pundits (Karl Rove, most notably) foresaw a massive political realignment and claimed that Republicans would usher in a 20-year majority. Obviously, they were wrong. After President Obama's 2008 victory, various liberal pundits and the media gushed of a liberal realignment and hailed landslide congressional victories for Democrats as tremendous popular approval of Obama's mandate.

For the past decade or so, we in the States have heard repeatedly about something going on in Iran. Increasingly in recent years, especially after the defeat of the Taliban in Afghanistan, Iran has been positioning itself as the primary representative of the Muslim nations against the West.

The recipe for happiness

One thing that has never ceased to amaze me is our happiness incompetence - man's inability to find any lasting level of satisfaction or joy in life. Despite the fact that every choice of every human being who ever lived was made in order to maximize that individual's level of personal happiness, the one thing that human beings seem to be consistently good at over time is falling short of happily-ever-after.
