Liberal Democracy Protects Right To Derision

I can, thanks very much, be as offensive as I care to be. I can write comments about different groups, call their cultures backwards and their gods made-up. And no matter how bad it gets, I can make it worse. I can even (though it would be a horrible idea to do so) take pot shots at the Business School.

STAFF EDITORIAL

We seem cradled in a culture that's uncomfortably numb. Problem is, we aren't really sure how to shock ourselves anymore. For instance, we are no longer entertained by woman comedians whose entire stand-up routine is based on obscenity and crude body language.

Ciao from Due Santi

It's official. Half of the sophomore class and some lucky juniors have escaped the confines of the Irving campus and have safely arrived at the magnificent Rome campus. Though the group flight from DFW, and every connecting flight following, was delayed and we were immersed in the Italian language, there were no worries.

Finis Viri

Continued from Feb. 1 I started writing these columns with the intention of addressing Limbo, especially now that there is talk in the Catholic Church of striking it from the books. But I think that to speak of Limbo, we must first address both the land of the blessed and the land of the damned.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor, The recent piece by Mike McMahon (Feb 1, 2006) addressing assisted suicide leaves much to be desired in its presentation of ideas. McMahon rejects the Biblical idea that ultimately we do not own ourselves, that Christ "bought [us] with a price" (1 Cor.6:19-20). Instead, he denotes personal ownership of one's own body "to do with as I please, so long as no one else is harmed."

Fireside Chats

Q: Dear Tommy, I'm having trouble with a relationship (i.e., I haven't had one for more than three years). Can you offer me any advice to get a good Catholic girl this Valentine's Day? Sincerely, Nick Wignall, junior A: Dear Nick, I'm glad you wrote me.

LETTER FROM: Chutney Bundals

To: jeremyspoke@gmail.com From: chutneybundals@yahoo.com Jeremy, Yesterday I attempted to fulfill my Valentine's duty to myself. You know that every year that Feb. 14 finds me "available" - which so far has been every year except when I was in fifth grade and dating Francine Pollux - I treat myself to a CD.
